Recycling Automotive Fuel Tank Material (example):

In the mid '90s Polymer Sciences was approached by a leading automotive fuel tank molder with problems related to scrap material and disposal.

The problem centered around the multilayered materials in the part and the inability of the molder to reuse this material cascaded back into the molding process, mixing it with virgin material. Since the fuel tanks are governed by the EPA and emission of fuel vapors through the part, a barrier material is used known as EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol). Since the material is not totally compatible with the HDPE material used to mold the tanks, utilizing the scrap had become impractical.

In resolving this problem we developed a new recycling process that allowed for the removal of the EVOH and delivered 100% HMW-HDPE (polyethylene) back to the molder for reuse. We also devised a processing plan for molders to process through the EVOH so that it had no affect on future part performance.

Finally, we developed a Materials Management program for the automotive fuel tank industry to rely on Polymer Sciences in the collection, purification, processing and sales of these materials. Polymer Sciences is now the largest processor and supply to the polymer aftermarket of HMW-HDPE "fuel tank material," with applications in blow molding, construction, packaging and extrusion industries. Supplying these material from processing operations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, we allow buyers requiring high cost material to purchase lower cost material while maintaining the high performance standards. We also provide fuel tank molders the opportunity to keep scrap materials completely off the floors at all times no matter market condition, complete freedom from the responsibility of removing, processing and selling these material and the opportunity to profit from the sale of these materials.
