Scrap Material Management Programs
During the course of business in the molding or OEM world, inefficiencies or
simply process functions generate unwanted or unusable materials (scrap).
Although most companies have personnel equipped to manage these material and
dispose of them, many firms choose to reserve their personnel to their specific
profession or industry - molding or producing quality parts not managing scrap.
PSI has a professional staff better equipped to deal in the polymer
post-industrial arena in processing materials to protect material properties and
position the material to achieve the highest possible yield for your firm. We handle all
aspects of the material movement out of your firm to placing the material in the
new application or developing strategies to introduce it back into your operation for re-use. This frees up your staff to concentrate on your business and allows
us to concentrate on your material and maintaining the maximum value for the
material in the market place. We not only keep a close pulse on the material sales prices making
sure to get you the best price, but we take special care with each material to
assure minimal degradation to the polymer's molecular structure -
even in the grinding process. This yields higher value materials to buyers who
would gladly pay more for higher quality and performing material allowing you
greater profits.
Similarly, some firms would like to structure a re-use program of their own
materials for environmental (ISO 14001 strategies) or financial incentives, but lack the technical expertise or the available personnel to manage
such programs. We have experienced staff and qualified polymer PhD on staff to
manage such programs and assure material integrity (maintain the molecular
structure and characteristics of the material and segregate contaminates from
the material) so that it may be pelletized or simply ground and re-introduced to
your facility. PSI can also certify the material performance to conform to
established automotive standards, supplying certifications with each shipment.
We have experience in the automotive industry supplying to Tier I, Tier II and
OEM accounts.

PSI has experience setting up processing procedures in all operations of
material re-sourcing no matter where your geographical area, to develop a
successful program and meet your expectations and rigorous production
requirements or quality standards.
The details of our Materials Management Programs are confidential, in fact
we are not aware of any other firms that handles this area of business as we do.
It maximizes your firms performance while maximizing the price you receive for your
scrap material to off set low yield production results.
Please contact us for an analysis and review of your materials or problems.
The more difficult the material the better. Even if it doesn't appear that the
material is recyclable, we have managed to turn impossible materials into useful
profitable programs for our clients with little or no upfront cost.

Key Benefits for Molders with Available Material
- Sound ecological solution for profitable material disposal.
- You conserve your personnel for working on production issues.
- We are a professional aftermarket firm accustomed to day-to-day
market price fluctuations and maintaining the highest sales price levels. for
your firm's material - allowing maximum profits.

all vendor assignments, payments, vender procedures, transportation,
processing, sales and collections.
- Material does not collect in your facility, no matter what the
market mood is, we make sure the material is removed and doesn't get in the
way of your production. If you sell your material into the market, you might
notice difficulty in getting the material picked up during downturns in the
market or if you have some internal contamination problems, we remove the
material no matter what.
- We act as if we are a division of your firm, at your instruction
empowering your decisions into the program to make it work. We work with you
not against you.
- Quarterly reporting of all financial and linguistic operations to
empower your personnel reporting to management.
- Project tracking and material history information at your finger
tips for environmental and departmental operations and reports.

Success Story#1:
An inquiry was made in our consulting services as to how to reduce the cost
associated with land filling commingled materials. After evaluation of the
materials we advised the customer that we could move this out of our consulting
service (with related hourly consulting charges) and handle this as a Materials
Management Program without any up front cost or obligations. After careful
evaluation we advised the customer that we could develop a successful program to
handle this material for them, in so doing, we could not only eliminate their
$250K per year cost to a waste management company to haul off their scrap in a
roll off to land fill, but we could also generate close to the same amount in
revenue currently not utilized. The first year of the program, we did eliminate
the land fill cost and brought in $300K of revenue.
Success Story#2:
While offering our Materials Management Program to a well experienced purchasing
agent at a large molding facility, we were informed that he was able to handle
all sales and disposal of material very successfully, as well as the purchasing
of virgin resin and all other purchasing responsibilities. We advised the
materials manager that we could increase his revenues by 20-30% the first year.
If we were unable to do so we would guarantee him the previous profits he had
experienced. The first month we cleaned out 500,000 pounds of material that had
accumulated on the plant floor due to slow sales and we increased sales revenue
on the material by 40%. The materials manager was pleased with our performance,
parts never again accumulated on his floor and we made sure he received the best
price for his scrap resource.
Success Story #3:
A domestic injection molder needed to compete with off shore
molders in a low cost tight margin project. Evaluating that the material costs
on the project constituted 40% of his costs, he set out to try to negotiate with
the polymer manufacturer, but the quantities were significantly less than their
price breaks.
With material PSI managed out of another factory, we re-processed
the same material type and increased the melt flow during compounding to
accommodate the project requirements. Once the materials were re-pelletized, it
was tested and a material certification sheet was sent for material approval.
The material was then subjected to end user testing and qualification. After
passing qualification by the end user, the material was specified in the part
drawings and as an approved material source. Each shipment contained a
certification sheet to verify the material performance characteristics and
source. Over all material costs was close to 20% less than virgin material and
the domestic molder was able secure the project.
Scrap Product Management & Disassembly
Through return programs, obsolescence of inventory or component cut outs from
scraped assemblies, various companies are forced to dump electronic units or
various components. Generally, this places a enormous burden on firms
financially and ecologically. Firms that have taken the challenge to implement
ISO 14001 and identify these products as significant aspects wrestle with the
most appropriate and best solution to achieve these goals.
Wiring harness and valve assembly for recycling
Polymer Sciences helps to develop sound recycling of all components,
sub-assemblies and parts associated with assemblies and sub-assemblies. Our
strategies include developing plans to recycle 100% of components and
parts including all metal, plastics, rubber, wiring with jackets and insulation,
springs, motors as well as all other component materials. These materials are
either placed back into circulation (e.g. fasteners sold back into the fastener
industry) or in the case of proprietary components they are disassembled our
ground up to recover in bulk. PSI will only sell component parts and assemblies
to pre-qualified firms that have proven safe environmentally friendly processes
for re-use. We will not sell these materials into developing countries without
first qualifying the recycling or processing company, evaluating the recycling
process, developing procedures and then implementing program inspections
to continually validate the handling of materials.
Material Resource:
In the process of molding parts to specifications and holding these specs,
most molders feel that they must use virgin material and will not even consider
recycled content material. The problem with recycled content material is not the
recycled material, it's the source. Time and time again we have seen recyclers
providing regrind or repelletize material to molders, but without the ability
to maintain material consistency in molding performance and part performance.
There are three main problems with the average recycling company supplying
materials to industry, 1) most recyclers don't understand that when you melt
down a material or submit to extended periods of heat this reduces it's performance characteristics, 2) consistent
material supply lines are the key to holding material specs and values and 3) recyclers do
not have a good history of setting up valid procedures and QC to maintain materials
characteristics and material consistency.
Polymer Sciences has a history of supplying recycled content resins into the
automotive, electronics, construction and recreational industries. Our material
can be relied on for consistent supply chain and material performance. Each
program must be developed around the individual part and material requirements.
The process takes time and patience, but the material cost savings can reach as
high as 40%.
Please notify our sales department with any inquiries to see if these
programs will work for you.
